APS to Sponsor AAAS Mass Media Fellow in 2008

For the tenth consecutive year, APS will sponsor an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Mass Media Science and Engineering Fellow for summer 2008. The application deadline is January 15, 2008.

The APS-sponsored AAAS Mass Media Science and Engineering Fellow will be one of approximately two dozen fellows working as science journalists during the summer. Fellows will receive a short orientation to science journalism prior to spending 10 weeks developing their ability to communicate complex scientific issues to non-scientists and improving public understanding of science. The AAAS places the fellows at participating media outlets, including newspapers, magazines, Internet news outlets, and radio and television stations.

The fellowship includes travel to Washington for orientation and evaluation sessions at the beginning and end of the summer, as well as a weekly stipend of $450.

ELIGIBILITY: To apply for the APS fellowship, an individual must be enrolled during the current year as a graduate or postgraduate student of physiology or a related discipline or as an undergraduate in the senior year. Brochure and Application are available in the Student Awards section of the APS website. Additional fellowships for students in other scientific and engineering disciplines are available through AAAS

In addition to the application form, applicants must submit a current résumé, a three- to five-page sample of writing directed to the general public, transcripts of graduate and undergraduate work, and three letters of recommendation. Two of the recommendation letters should be from faculty members, and the third should be a personal reference. The selection process is designed to seek out qualified candidates especially from under-represented communities, including African-Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans, as well as scientists with disabilities.

DEADLINE: The application deadline is January 15, 2008. For more information or to receive a copy by mail, contact APS Communications Specialist Christine Guilfoy at (301) 634-7253 or cguilfoy@the-aps.org.
