IPS President's 2001 Annual Meeting Report
The sixth annual meeting of the Iowa Physiological Society (IPS) was held
on Friday and Saturday, April 20-21, 2001 at the Hotel Fort Des Moines in
Des Moines, Iowa in conjunction with a meeting of the Iowa Academy of
Science (IAS). The concurrent meeting format allows students, teachers, and
researchers at various educational levels (high school through university)
and with varying interests to interact.
Dr. Irving Zucker, Chairman of the Department of Physiology and
Biophysics at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, gave the keynote
address, "Reflex control of sympathetic nervous system in heart failure." A
generous Lectureship Award from the American Physiological Society supported
this presentation. A brief talk was also given by Dr. Martin Frank,
Executive Director of the American Physiological Society, concerning the
American Physiological Society. Oral presentations concerning the 1918-1919
influenza pandemic, current trends in tuberculosis, and mechanosensitive
channels in sensory neurons were given.
Eleven posters made up the remainder of the presentations. On Friday,
April 20 posters were placed on display and the abstracts were distributed.
That allowed time for question development for the formal poster discussions
which occurred on Saturday April 21.
