BEVERLY PETTERSON BISHOP, PROFESSOR,
NEUROPHYSIOLOGIST October 19, 1922-September 20, 2008
Beverly Petterson Bishop was a SUNY Distinguished
Teaching Professor of Physiology and Biophysics at the University at
Buffalo, having had a career of teaching and research that spanned more than
fifty years. She was the author of more than 150 scholarly articles, the
editor of four books, and had taught and mentored thousands of students. Her
research interests included the identification and analysis of the ways the
nervous system controls muscle activity in both humans and animals. Her
experimental work focused on the neural regulation of the respiratory
muscles. She taught neurophysiology to nearly 40 classes of physical therapy
students and produced monographs and book chapters that became seminal in
that area.
Beverly kept close contact with many of her students
over the years both personally and professionally. She viewed her students
as individuals, first and foremost, and her extraordinary example continues
to guide their professional lives.
Beverly was a member of the American Physiology
Society (APS) and was an elected member of its governing council. She
contributed her knowledge and expertise to the creation of the American
Physiological Society's slide-tape program in neurophysiology and served the
Society as a leader of the Central Nervous System Section and as a member of
the APS Council. She also served as the Chair of the Membership Advisory
Committee and as a member of numerous other APS committees.
Beverly received the UB's Chancellor Award for
Excellence in Teaching.
She also served a three-year term on a National
Institutes of Health study section - respiration and applied physiology.
Born (Ruth) Beverly Petterson on October 19, 1922 in
Corning, NY. Dr Bishop earned her Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics
from Syracuse University in 1944, her Masters of Science in experimental
psychology from the University of Rochester in 1946, and her Doctorate in
physiology from the University at Buffalo in 1957.
She and her husband traveled worldwide and piloted
their Cessna 210 all over the USA and adjacent areas.
Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Charles
W. Bishop, Ph.D., her son, Geoffrey C. Bishop, and her grandson, Orin D.
Bishop, both of Calgary. Canada.
Beverly was a friend, colleague, and dedicated
contributor to physiology and neuroscience. She will be missed by all who
had the privilege to know her.
Memorial services will be held at The University at
Buffalo Slee Hall on the North (Amherst) campus on Thursday October 30, 2008
at 4:00 PM.
Colleagues, friends, former students and family will
gather to celebrate her contributions to science and our lives.
Donations may be made to Dr. Bishop's fund to
support student participation at national neurophysiology meetings. Please
make checks payable to: University at Buffalo Foundation and sent to:
Beverly P. Bishop Memorial Fund, Physiology & Biophysics, 124 Sherman Hall,
3435 Main Street, Buffalo, NY 14214. These funds will be used to continue
her efforts to educate and energize a new generation of neuroscientists.
