In this issue:

  • Researchers harassed by patient advocates
  • The economics of research – two views

Researchers harassed by patient advocates?

A recent Washington Post article relates the story of researchers being harassed after providing advice to the FDA on an experimental vaccine therapy for prostate cancer. The FASEB OPA was contacted by members of the press who are interested in whether other researchers have experienced similar harassment. If you know of anyone who has experienced this type of action, please let me know and I will pass on the information.

The economics of research

An often used argument for increasing research funding is that it provides an economic driver. Two recent articles address this issue from different angles. The first article, from the Scientist, discusses many different models and points out that it is difficult to measure the rate of return very accurately. The second is an Op-ed from today’s Washington Post that highlights the findings of a report on increased longevity that relates lifespan with new drug development.
