Economic impact of NIH funding
On Thursday, November 13, the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health held a hearing entitled “Treatments for an Ailing Economy: Protecting Health Care Coverage and Investing in Biomedical Research.” There were two panels of witnesses. The first panel focused on reforming health care, while the second panel focused on the economic impact of NIH funding. Witnesses in the second panel included Acting NIH Director Raynard Kington and Ronald Pollack of Families USA, among others. Families USA put out a recent report that seeks to quantify the economic impact of NIH funding. To read the witness statements, click here. Notably, Subcommittee Chair Frank Pallone (D-NJ) entered into the hearing record the letter cosigned by 230 organizations, including APS, calling for $1.9 billion for NIH in any economic stimulus bill. Full committee Chair John Dingell (D-MI) also made a statement in support of the economic benefits of NIH research.
High expectations for science in the next administration
Last week’s Science featured an article on the high expectations that scientists have for the Obama Administration. The article touches on stem cell research, federal funding for biomedical research, and the appointment of Presidential advisors.
